The AX-15 was removed and replaced with an AW4 from an '01 XJ.

http://www.stu-offroad.com/engine/aw-4/aw-4-1.htm covers the details of the swap.

Thanks to Nacho at AMX 4x4 Salvage for the tranny.

Thanks to Troy at Toys by Troy for the lift and assistance in doing those thing I suck at....welding exhausts, etc.

Thanks to Bob Pelatt for the help on day 1 & 2.

It is still a work in progress as I work out the details for the cooling system. Summer will most likely cause me to make a change or two....we'll see when we get there.

Thanks!

The best part about this AW4 swap was that it was in MY TJ! (and not in a friends) :D

Right on Stu!
You do these things to your jeep just to make your web site better, don't you?

Nick,

I did buy a rig to build up....back in early '99. ;) I'm finally starting to get it just the way I like it.

Will you be caging in the fan?

Caging in the fan.....do you mean building some kind of structure around it?

Linda

Yes. I was asking if you are planning on building some kind of structure around it.

I had not considered it at this point in time.

Do you think it is too vulnerable tucked up against the bottom of the tub?

It's hard to tell where it is mounted in your pictures. I am going to guess that it is mounted under the driver seat?

Behind the driver's seat but not under it. That is the rear spring right next to it in the picture.

Stu,
Do you by chance know if this swap would work on the 4cyl.? i've been through 2 auto trannies in the almost 3 years i've owned it (its a 2000), and was considering swapping to a manual for dependability and more gearing ratios, but would definately rather stay with an auto if i can get it w/ OD.
By the way, the work looks great!
Thanks in advance

John,
While I am not 100% certain, I am thinking the input shaft is a different size....and perhaps the same is true on the input shaft of the t-case.

I am not at all certain that a 4 cylinder would be a really good match up for the AW4 and its .75:1 over drive. With 4.56 gears, I am only turning 2250 RPM at 65 MPH. You could go to 4.88 gears, but you won't be gaining that much.
