Ron what size tires do you plan on running? You might find you are
better off with a 3.5 lift and only have to do the lift once. I run a
superlift on 89 YJ with Rancho 9000 shocks. I am happy with it.

Dan,

You will need to remove the carrier and the ring gear with 4.10s or you
can grind some of one of the teeth of the ring gear the remove the shaft.
You will not need to mess with back lash or any other settings unless you
replace the gears or remove the pinion gear. Removing the carrier will take
some doing as it will come out vary hard. I think that most use a winch to
pull the carrier out. Others may some better ideals.

Subject: RE adjustable track bar install question

I have a bag of bolt/nut/spacer assembly pieces for the heim end of
my track bar and I'm wondering how the spacers should be oriented
(they are both tapered on one end). I'm guessing these go on either
side of the frame piece with the tapered ends against the frame
piece. Also I assume the threaded end of the bolt should be on the
high side. Since there is no cotter pin to hold the nut in place, is
it necessary or advisable to use lock tight?
Thanks for any help,
Larry

The smaller tappered ends of the spacers go against the heim. The nut is
self locking...but lock tight is a good idea. The nut for the bolt goes on
the high side of the frame mount. Torque it to at least 175 lbs (on the
frame end) to keep it in place.

I would go with the 3.5 it is usually about the same price as 2.5 and if
you decide to go to 33's later you will only need a body lift or a short
shackle lift to make it work. In the long run the 3.5 will save you money.

I got some of that Super Degreaser they sell, the problem is I don't
like using water based solvents on things like bearings and
differentials. Might not be a good reason but those are the last things
I want a possibility of rusting.

All,
Check out my photo album below for my recent upgrades
(8" RE lift w/ skyjacker pitman arm drop and 36" super
swamper TSL tires. Now I've done it and so far it is
very little noticable compared to BFG M/T tires on
road. Will go offroad soon after a minor fender
trimming & rear shock mounting extension brackets are
installed.

Be sure and use red locktite. But, before you put it on, be sure your
track bar is adjusted right. You'll have a heck of a time getting
that nut off if it cures up.

I pulled the ign switch off the column and found the wire marked for the "run" lead. Then as a test, I tried to start the truck then and it cranked but did not run. I also used the same color wire that was used for the switch so it doesn't stand out.

If you don't know which wire to cut. You might be able to pull the sw off the column, they are usually labeled, or stop by a dealer to see if they have one in stock and look at it. Then remember the position of the wire and try it out.

Hope this helps! I know it saved my truck twice... :->

Simple green would probably work as a good washer fluid.

Subject: XJ Lift

I was going to the wrenching party this weekend but it looks like I'll be
wrenching my own 3" lift for my wife's Cherokee ... any tips/tricks to make
the install easier would be appreciated. Here are the details:

99XJ
Auto
8.25 rear 30 front w/3.55's and tracklock (no mods, I removed the
shackle/spacer lift I had earlier)

Here are the components to the lift:
front springs, front lower control arms, trac arm drop down bracket, rear
add-a-leafs

This is a 3" kit, I already have the tcase lower kit, longer shocks and
longer UBolts.

TIA

I would NOT grind the gears. Great way to ruin a perfectly good set of gears.
Remove the carrier with a REALLY big pry bar and using your legs as the muscle.
Hook it into the carrier area or something convenient. If you keep the bear
races on the correct side, oriented corrected (up end up, and down end down),
then you won't have any problems. Sounds like your putting in a lockright or
something like that, so you won't have to worry about mixing up the carrier
bearings since they are pressed on and the carrier only goes in one way. I
believe you will need to remove the ring gear to get the cross shaft out.
Again, not a big deal. I wouldn't even worry about getting the ring gear back
on with the holes in the exact same spot. Not an issue. If you put the bearing
caps back on in the right place, you should be good to go.

Just as a side note, be sure to replace your axle seals. If you don't, they are
nearly guaranteed to leak. For whatever reason, once you pull that axle out and
disturb the seal to axle interface, then it doesn't want to seal back up (most
of the time). I have learned the hard way as I am sure many other on the list
have done as well.

Overall it shouldn't be a problem.................

Powersteering pump from 6 cylinder won't work. Will need a new Chevy style.
High pressure hose to steering may need to be custom made. I was able to use
the AMC stock one, but the routing was not ideal.

This was just one thing that came to mind while reading your post about other
things that you may find that won't work with the SBC.

If anyone is interested, I have 200 decals without the Arizona printed on them. Printers mistake and they are reprinting them for me. They didn't want these returned so if anyone can think of a good use for them, please let me know.
