FWIW....when ever I order anything from a catalog I ask..."who's the
manufacturer". Quadratec and 4 Wheel Drive Hardware are wising up and don't
always use the reviled Steel Horse name. Sounds like SH is wising up too and
starting to change their name on certain products. If only they'd put their
effort into quality. If only the catalog companies would drop SH. I would
think they get tired of handling the complaints and returns.
Recently, I ordered an accessory. They carried SH and another brand in what
I was looking for. I expressly told the salesperson that if they send me SH,
I'll ship it back unopened. I made a fairly big point about it. I got the
correct (ie non SH) item.
There.....I feel better now.
Happy Trails....

Subject: Raw Deal Motorcycle Status
Those of you that have run Raw Deal over the past month or have seen
the motorcycle that has been dumped, destroyed, shot, etc at the
beginning of Lower Raw Deal. I'm assuming it's still out there, if
I'm wrong let me know.
In any case I just spoke with Jack Ragsdale @ the Phoenix BLM office,
and he said that it would be perfectly OK for us to remove it,
however in theory if the bike has not been reported stolen by the
owner, then whoever removes it could be brought up on charges of
theft.
I think I remember someone getting the VIN number of the bike, can
whoever that is please email me with it. Jack said he can give it to
his law enforcement contact for his office and they will contact the
owner and discuss it with him. In theory, they could charge the guy
with a littering charge of some sort, and/or make him come out and
get it.
Jack says it would look great of us to go out and get it, but he does
want to make sure none of us break the the law in doing so, although
he agreed that would be very hypocritical of the guy to do, but it is
possible.
So if someone has that number (if the bike is still there), could you
email it too me, and we'll get the ball rolling to get this think
outta there.
Thanks,
Dan

Subject: RE: Re: OT: Computer firewall
Absolutely UNTRUE....
If you think for one moment that a software firewall is unnecessary "Scare
Ware"... you need to think again.
No protection via a software or hardware firewall means that someone WILL
gain access your computer if you connect to the internet.
If YOU leave your computer online via a cable modem or DSL or other
permanently online connection and you don't install at LEAST a software
firewall (a hardware firewall via a router is more secure) you WILL end up
with people accessing your computer without your knowledge... GUARANTEED!
Case in point:
I installed Network ICE's BlackIce Defender (Software firewall). Via Cox at
home cable modem connection, I was averaging 30 or so "attacks" on my system
a DAY!!! Out of these 30 or so "attacks", 10 or so PER DAY were valid
attempts to violate my computer system via Trojan horse programs such as the
sub-seven virus and PC Anywhere probes.
Even with Black ICE defender installed... someone eventually hacked their
way through the software firewall and (listen to this) gave themselves FULL
administrator permission and made all of my drives shared drives. This
means that someone could access everything on my computer. The hacker did
this even after I had disabled sharing on my system... AND I had a software
firewall installed.
To fix this problem... I installed a $150 router from Best buy and now I get
zero (that's right... ZERO) hits a day (I still have the software firewall
installed behind the router).
Second Case in point:
A friend of mine just had cox at home installed on his computer. I
recommended that he purchase at least a software firewall. After one week,
he finally installed one. Guess what? In one week without a software
firewall he had the sub-seven virus (which gives a hacker full access to
your computer). He just went out and purchased a router and installed it.
For those of you who think that hackers are only interested in large
corporation computers... or that protection software is unnecessary... think
again. If you're online any length of time at all... you can bet that
someone has tried to hack into your computer. If you're online full time
via a permanent connection, and you don't have at least a software firewall
such as Black ICE defender... your computer is likely already hacked into
and open to the world to see whatever you have on it... delete your files...
format your hard disk... whatever they want to do.
Bottom line:
If you want at least SOME protection from Hackers... purchase a software
firewall.
If you want Decent protection from Hackers... purchase a hardware firewall
(Router).
If you want absolute protection from Hackers... don't EVER get on the
internet; Nothing and I mean NOTHING is hack proof if someone wants into
your computer bad enough.
I too am a "Techie" (Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering)... if anyone
has any questions, please feel free to write to me. Installing a hardware
firewall is really quite easy, and I'd be happy to help anyone who may want
some advice.
Whatever you do... at least recognize that your computer is vulnerable and
take some precautions to prevent unauthorized access. Failure to do so may
jeopardize the integrity of your computer system.

Joe West

Dan, I was there yesterday and the bike is still there, however I do not have

dont know what ever came of that. If someone could tell me where the VIN
would be, I will go back and try to get it.

To compare with that cherokee. I'm probably going to be selling my ZJ in a
month or so...I haven't checked the market lately but I'll likely put it up
for around $10K.
Stats:
1993 ZJ 4.0, NP231 (commandtrac), 98K miles,recently rebuilt RH42 tranny
with about 10 months left on unlimited mileage warranty, 3.5" teraflex lift
with edelbrock shocks, 31" BFG muds, powerstop crossdrilled rotors,
turbocity throttle body, K&N air filter, jacobs spark plug wires, brand new
mike leech header, dynomax high flow cat and cat back, Hella XL lights, 180
degree thermostat and 3 core radiator...probably someother stuff i can't
think of right now... the jeep is in excellent condition...paint, body,
interior, mechanically.
Anyways...just food for thought before ya buy that cherokee.

Subject: sycamore creek friday meeting time and place
Okay for those that want to go to Sycamore Friday, if you live on the east side we will be meeting up at the On the Run on the Southeast corner of Power and Southern at about 8:45. I want to leave there at 9:00 and get up to sycamore around 9:30-9:45 we will wait at the Sycamore/Beeline Trailhead until about 10:00 - 10:15. I don't have a CB, but those who do we'll be on the standard channel 4, so if you are running late, let us know and we can wait. As for Blair, I hope you are comming, so if you need to go a little later we can work something out! The weather should be nice, so I will be open, I am bringing my top just in case!! :) See you guys tomorrow!!! -Rob

When I had Cox@Home, I regularly checked the Software Firewall logs.
Once I came home from work and found about 3 dozen various hits from
the same IP address (and it wasn't one of the @Home addresses).
After that I started turning off my computer unless I was using it.
Right now I'm not getting any hits... hmmm... I wonder if that's
because its not hooked up to anything... <g>

I would have to agree with keeping an eye on the .edu hits, hackers
learn to hack someone else by signing up with a local university
account and snooping their system, the schools are usually pretty
easy on them just giving them a couple of warnings then finally
kicking them off, and they go to the next school and start again.
if you are running NT, you might want to check your user accounts,
and monitor them, usually a hacker will install a Trojan Horse then it
will set them up a shell account on the server, which will give them
administrative privilages and absolute access. So if you have a user
account that you didn't assign and wasn't there by default get rid of
it. Make sure all of your passwords are a combination of letters
numbers and symbols. programs like Loph Crack can check that for you
and show what hacker programs are capable of. And remember the hacker
in your machine is probably 13 y/o. Watch out for telnet
infiltrations, or pings coming from phone companies, alot of hackers
set up a shell via telnet into the phone networks and work that way.
when they set up a shell they use your computers info to hack others,
that's one of the ways they get away with it.
Commonly a hacker is mislabeled, a Hacker is not going to go after
you, just use your stuff, a cracker will destroy everything on your
machine. A Hacker goes for information, a cracker is hateful.
Search for Loph Crack on the internet, it is a brute foce password
cracker, it will tell you which pw's are sufficient and which ones
are not.

Regards,
Joe West

Absolutely UNTRUE....
If you think for one moment that a software firewall is unnecessary "Scare
Ware"... you need to think again.
No protection via a software or hardware firewall means that someone WILL
gain access your computer if you connect to the internet.

James,
To compare with that cherokee.

Sorry if I came off too harsh but you happened to pick on a VERY sore
subject...
Had a hacker not recently given him/her self permission to whatever they
wanted on my computer, I probably wouldn't be so sensitive...
Again... I apologize if I was too harsh... now... go get yourself a

Search for Loph Crack on the internet, it is a brute foce password
cracker, it will tell you which pw's are sufficient and which ones
are not.

You misunderstood the sticker. It was referring to his state of mind
when he was lowering the truck! be advised you might want to get off
