Being a programmer and techie, I can tell you this stuff is mostly
"scare-ware". Other machines can send requests to every port on your
computer harmlessly all day and unless there is a service or program
listening there to do something with these requests, nothing happens. A
"hacker" cannot do anything via simple port requests to a machine unless
they have a "trojan-horse" program that is running on your PC listening for
these requests.

The real use in these types of firewalls are to catch requests that LEAVE
your computer without your knowledge, such as when a "trojan-horse" program
kicks off and trys to "phone-home" to the hackers PC or website. There are a
few programs out there that also send statistics or other info to the
company's home computer when you run them. For example, Internet Explorer
checks in with MS periodically to see if there are any new things that they
think you need.

These are the programs that you would want to be notified of. When you run
that new "joke" program that someone sends you will be able to see that its
trying to send your info to someone else's PC, possibly so that they can
come back later and poke around via the new backdoor.. Normal "PING", and
"FTP" type outside requests are nothing to worry about and come with the
network - its not necesarrily anyone trying to access your machine.

It's great software especially if you use it in conjunction with a LinkSys
Router on your home network. Just remember that not all hits are bad just
broadcasts or drop sites that are trying to reattach. If you are interested
in tracking the hackers look for the .edu hits and keep the ZoneAlarm in
stealth mode.

I personally would suggest a 1993-1995 ZJ with 4.0l and SelectTrac
transfer case. It has cost me about $6k to make mine trail ready, which
includes a few costly mistakes. ZJs are slightly larger than XJs which
makes them a little more versatile if you regularly carry passengers and
you can carry a 33" tire in the stock spare tire location. I have one
crack in the body, but the crack was there before I bought it and it has
taken four years of heavy trail use to make it worse. After all this
time I can still max out the front and rear suspension and still open
and close all 5 doors without any problems. And besides, you can now get
good used ZJs (soccer mom vehicles) for less than $10k. One more thing,
the Grand Cherokee is the ONLY Jeep product to win 4x4 of the year
(Petersen's Offroad) 5 times in 8 years! These are way cool Jeeps!

Enough gloating! See ya on the trail!

There are lots of camp grounds in Oak Creek Canyon, bit they tend to be a
little crowded at times. But mostly in the summer. If that's not a good
choice for you can find a place near Jerome. Its only about 20 miles from
Sedona and is Just as beautiful. If you decide to go there let me know and I
will give you directions to Perkinsville ranch. Its the turn around spot for
the Verde Canyon Railway. If you want to spend a full day in the area, you
could go on a little farther to Sycamore Pass. Its a beautiful spot with lots
of Indian Ruins in the area if you Don't mind a little Hiking. I grew up in
the area and know it pretty well.

Subject: AZ Virtual Gold Prospectors group

One of the reasons I developed an interest in Jeeping was to use the
Jeep to get to the Arizona backcountry so I could do other things,
like camping and hiking. After learning a bit more about AZ and
western states history, I've gotten a bug to try a little gold
prospecting as well while out Jeeping.

I've found that information about this is just as fleeting as Jeeping
in AZ - at least before we started this group.

So, I decided to start a different group for those who may be
interested in gold prospecting in AZ.

If any of you are interested in Jeeping and gold prospecting,
consider
signing up the the AZ-VGP at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AZ_VGP

The charter is:

This is a discussion group for GPAA members in Arizona. This list is
for discussion of gold prospecting and relic hunting in AZ, tips and
techniques, tools, and for setting up backcountry trips. This list is
not affiliated with the GPAA, although members are expected to be
GPAA members since we may schedule trips to GPAA claims. We have good
folk, enthusiasm, and a love for the Arizona backcountry.

This charter mentions GPAA only because trips may be scheduled to
GPAA claims, and you must be a GPAA member. I believe there are other
gold prospectors organizations that may have their own claims. That's
fine as long as the participants know whose claims they are going to.

Yea, off-topic, but we're all into both Jeeps and computers.

Sad to say but anyone with a DSL or Cable connection where you stay
on-line for long periods of time, needs to have a firewall.

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Saturday, March 3, 2001

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Jim Florence is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, March 3, 2001.

When: Camping out Sat. and Sun.
Where: Camping at Martinez Cabin
Rating: 4.0+
Length: All Weekend
CB Channel: 4

We plan to run Martinez Canyon on Sat. and maybe Upper Ajax on Sunday. If I get off work early I may head out and set up camp Friday night. The runs will leave Martinez Cabin around 9:30

Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.

Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.

The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.

A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.

As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.

The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"

This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

If you're curious about how well your computer stacks up against
electronic predators, Symantec has a security checker that'll see how
vulnerable your computer is: http://security2.norton.com/us/intro.asp?
venid=sym&langid=us Although, I'm sure if you don't have a bunch of
Norton products, it'll probably say that you need them.

If you've got a static IP address (cable, broad band connection,
etc.) you should really look into getting some sort of firewall set
up on your system.

The Shields Up! page is one heck of a good site. I'm glad that you shared this.

Thanks,

Yea, off-topic, but we're all into both Jeeps and computers.

Sad to say but anyone with a DSL or Cable connection where you stay
on-line for long periods of time, needs to have a firewall.

An excellent site that explains how to protect your computer is
"Shields Up!" at:

https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

They discuss Zonealarm and other methods. I chose Network ICE
Defender, information at:

http://www.networkice.com/

Do it!

I see that Quadratec is selling a cab cover like the California Top
one. Its called the the Rock Crusher Cab Top and Tonneau. Under
200.00 for both, not bad.

Guess I added an itme to my want list.

Subject: Re: Check Engine Code

Update #2-- On the way to work two miles from home I stopped at a
four way stop sign. Then when I pressed the accelerator PLLAAAAHHH!
the engine died. I tried seven or eight times before I finally got it
to start by pressing the accelerator to the floor. Good news is now
the Check Engine light is now off, but at every stop when applying
gas from an idle kills the engine. If I rev the engine I can get it
to go. It just seems to want to die when I give it gas. (kind of hard
to explain). I am thinking fuel pump or repair shop. Can anyone help
me diagnose?
Please???
