Subject: Bonehead of the day/year award

At the end of December of '99 I bought 4 chrome mods from Big-O in
Chandler, the invoice read 15x8 5-4.5. Well, I went to buy a rim for
a spare tire Monday at another Big-O and I made sure the guy knew I
wanted the same offset and rim. I got the spare back and noticed it
didn't look like the same offset as my other rims. I imediately
started giving the guy a ration. He went into the shop and grabed the
tire calipers and measured the rims on the ground on my TJ, they were
15x7's.
I dug up my reciept for the four and went to Big-O in Chandler. Their
intial reaction is, my rims are rock damaged and they have switched
ownership since my purchase there (about a week after).
The manager is going to wait until the newer owner gets in on Friday
and ask what he wants to do, although the manager said, the newer
owner is getting tired of fixing the old owners problems.
Any suggestions, other than slaming me (I know with Discount I
wouldn't have had this problem) would be appreciated.
This is an FYI also, how many of you measured your rims after they
were installed?
TIA

I welded a bar across the main loop of my roll cage just below my shoulder
height to attach my harness to. I also tied my seat mounts to the cage along
with all the seat belt mounts. That way the jeep can actually tear away from
the cage without cutting me in half. That's how its done in race cars.

Hope this helps,

the preivous owner's problem. If you need I am shure that we could
get a bit of an e-mail canpaign going because this is total bull. I
might be interested in your old wheels I like the narrow wheels. What

Cherokee's are great 4-wheelin and around town
jeeps. The only drawback is that if you do alot of 4+
trails and have more than 3" of lift, the unibody will
split and tear. These are a lot harder to repair than
a frame. I enjoyed my cherokee. I'll probably buy
another one.

Updated info: MDA canceled the Jamboree. Officially they say we're "too
dangerous"............ "Unofficially" our money is not green enough. At the
last MDA meeting on the 7th Mike was frustrated because no one had picked up
the "major sponsorship..... $7,000.00". 4-Wheeler Supply was going for the
$3500.00 or $4000.00 and Earnhardt the $1000.00 but that obviously wasn't
enough. Mike wanted us to "move it out a few months" so we could maybe get
sponsors. When we said that was impossible he started hemming and hawing
about "too dangerous," "not big enough profit" etc........... His final
proposal was: "ASA do the Jamboree WITHOUT MDA's name or sponsorship.......
and then write them a check"! Those of us at the meeting simply said he
needed to get an answer by the next day so we could go to the delegate
meeting with firm information. He called Friday afternoon and announced
corporate MDA (as well as his boss) "did not want to continue". He didn't
care much that a lot of people had done A LOT of work so
far..................

Anyway, it's off. Have had suggestions to maybe approach March of Dimes or
Special Olympics for next year............... maybe a Jamboree in
combination with a "24 hour marathon of 4-wheeling"......... We'll see.
When I get through the Convention and Show Me Run I'll look into it.

All I know.

Subject: Check Engine Code

Thanks everyone for your help. I now know more than I intended to
ever want to know about the YJ's computer. Well... maybe not. Now
that I know how the thing works somewhat, I understand it much
better. Although the code meanings were accurate I got some mixed
opinions about what to fix and how to reset the computer. The codes
were 12 battery diconnected, 33 AC problems, 21 O2 Sensor problems,
22 engine coolant temp sensor problem, 51 O2 senses air fuel mix
lean, and 55 end of codes.
This is how I started correcting the problems. I have checked all
wiring and connections including the fuses and battery/alt. voltages.
Changing the O2 sensor removed the 51 condition but the rest of the
codes still remain. Next I will be replacing the coolant temp.
sensor.
About reseting the computer. That is preaty simple. First when you
install a new electronic emission control component you must clear
the codes before starting the engine. For 91 - 95 just disconnect the
+ battery terminal for more than 15 seconds. After starting the
engine you may have eratic engine response for a bit while the
computer relearns the engines operating parameters. ***On 97 and
newer I read that you should not disconnect the battery you must have
the computer cleared with a SCAN tool or by the dealer or qualified
repair facility after the system has been repaired.***
I will let you know how the Temp sensor helps after I save enough
lunch money to buy one.

In defense of Big O, Tara and I have bought numerous wheels and tires
from Steve at the Big O on Rural/Broadway, with absolutely zero
problems. When I take shredded tires in for new ones, all they say
is "Good one!" with a smile, no hassle, quick turn around, and you
don't have to buy another tire certificate. Considering what my
tires look like when they go back in, they are great for not giving
me any flack.

Obviously, there have been bad experiences with Big O, just wanted
anyone in the east valley to know that this location is very
respectable.

I know Big O brand tires probably aren't has good as BFG (although
for the abuse I put them through, they hold up quite well), but I got
my tires/wheels (identical size mud tire, same rim) for over $300
less than what Discount was quoting for their BFG's and same rims.

As usual, your milage may very.

When I bought (5) 15X8 with 3.75 backspace I measured all five of
them at the dealer myself. They were correct but I checked them
because from my experience people do make mistakes. In your case I
would try to work with the dealer. Be nice about it, kindness goes a
long way futher than anger. If the dealer won,t work with you call
the Big-O main office.

The Big-O on 40th st and Greenway is also an excellent shop. It is owned by
two brothers who are also into wheelin. I have taken 5 tires in to be
replaced in less than a year and when they see me pull in they just laugh and
say " blow another one ok we will order " . I really put these tires through

replace. I wouldnt buy from anyone else. Just my .02 cents .
