Spent the weekend building a cage for a friend of mine. We modeled it after my XJ, but ended up doing the back alot different. He didn't mind losing the cargo space behind the rear seat, so we ended up doing a big X from the upper "c" pillar to the lower "d" pillar. I think it turned out pretty sweet:

He is going to be adding a few gussets a at few tube intersections and a couple of downbars at the b-pillar behind the rear seat. Probably going to add a nice "v" in the front windshield out of some 1 inch, too.

Whaddya think??

Thanks for the compliments! This was only the second cage I've built, I was pleasantly surprised how it turned out. It fits a lot tighter to the dash than mine does, and the "X" at the back is just way cool, IMO.

The only thing I may have done different if I could would be to put a couple bends in the upper windshield bar for more clearance, but my friend didn't mind it straight, so thats what we did.

He will be adding spreaders between the upper B and C pillar hoops, as they can be straight(he has no bender), and he wants to try and do some of it himself.

Looks FAB-ulous Woody...

This may be a lame question, but I take it he is not going to paint it?

He just painted it this weekend. The windshield and other glass was covered and he used cardboard as a shield. He said it turned out pretty clean.

Is the rear seat still usable? I would like to cage mine, but have to have the rear seat for the kids. What does something like this cost in materials?

Rear seat is totally usuable. The bar behind the front seats makes for a nice place for the rear passengers to hold on to.

Getting in and out is a little tighter for the back seat, but really not that bad.

Total cost of materials is around $200. Thats about 90 feet of 1.5" HREW tubing, floor plates and grade 8 hardware to attach it to the floor.

PM me if you really want to have a cage built for your XJ.

I'm unemployed right now and have the time to do it.
