Hi James;
I also did this conversion on my 82(wide track) CJ7. I also sport a Ford 9"
rear and a SOA. To do the waggy swap you will have to shorten the long side
tube by 3.5" for wranglers and 4" for wide track CJ. You will have to have
the long side axle cut and re-spline or do what I did and have Warn make you
a custom axle. For the steering I designed my own custom setup. I used rod
ends from National. The Tie rod is 11/4" chrome molly steel while the cross
over connecting rod is 1" chrome molly steel. I used National's Maxi rod
ends they are rated at 48klbs this is 4x stronger then f a stock 1 ton tie
rod end. I bought the crossover connection block kit but had to modify it
because I added a 2" add-a-leaf to my spring pack. My connecting rod is
parallel to the ground so bump steer is not a problem. Also remember when
re-attaching the knuckle you cut off the tube you will need to use an angle
finder to set the caster and camber. You will also have to pre-heat the
knuckle to 400 deg F. before welding it back on and use a high nickel rod
like 7818 to do the welding.

I didn't shorten anything its 2.5 inches wider than the stock d30. That's
1.25" inches wider per side. You can't notice it at all. I got a pitman arm
from the same wagoneer and used all the stock steering components off the
wagoneer.

What year is your Jeep?? What year Waggy?? I used a 44 from a 74 Waggy. If I
did not shorten the long side it would have looked really funny as the
Waggy's short side is only 1/2" longer then my stock D30 but the long side
was 41/2" longer then my stock D30.

Jon,
I carry the entire Dana 30 front assembly including the hubs all preassembled. This way you do not have to mess around with trying to get that big 36mm axle stub nut off. Just pull off the brakes, remove 3 bolts (1/2" 12 point socket) and pull out the hub and axles. Slide the new ones in. Piece of cake.
I saw these were available from either Quadratec or 4WD Hardware. I'll verify prices tonight.

You can get HercUliner kits at Ace, Pep Boys, K-Mart and I'm sure
other places. It should have everything you need (gallon of Herc,
rollers, and some Scotchbrite-ish pads). Price usually runs around
$100 or so. Sometimes K-Mart will put it on sale for $80 or $90. If
you're lining a Wrangler tub, the gallon should be sufficient.
I've heard some use Xylene (?) to clean the tub after roughing up the
paint with the pads.
I haven't done it myself, but plan to when it warms up a bit and I
have enough time to take out my seats and get it done.
I think rockcrawler.com has a write up on it (I'm sure there are
others, but I can't remember off hand which sites).

Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!
Jon Loveless is leading a Sycamore Creek trail run on Monday, February 19, 2001.
When: Meet at 9AM - done by 2PM
Where: Meet at the entrance to 4 Peaks Road on SR87. About 10 miles North of Shea Blvd. Depart from there at about 9:15AM
Rating: 3.5+
Length: 4 - 5 hours
CB Channel: 4
We will do Upper Sycamore - starting up the creek as far as we can go and then head into the wash and eventually coming out at Lower Sycamore where Widows Run is. Any brave souls who want to challenge the yahoos to a hill climb are welcome to do so. This trail is about like FR42. Probably a 3.0 to 3.5. It is mostly hard sand, sandstone and hills with narrow trails. We may do some experimenting back there and there are plenty of places to play. My brother-in-law is in town from Minneapolis and I told him I would take it easy for his first off road adventure.

Jon,
Four Wheel Drive Hardware lists the parts in their catalog as follows:
Axleshaft assembly - Inner and outer axles, and ujoints preassembled. I think this is the way to go since a ujoint failure usually will mangle the yokes on the axles.
Drivers side - $119.95
Pass. side - $129.95
If you opt to go the easier trail fix which doesn't require you to remove the 36mm axle nut you'll need 2 new hubs which run $129.95 each. This way you remove the entire assembly with just 3 bolts that are 1/2" 12 point socket. This is what I carry. I haven't needed them yet...knock on wood.

Jon,
Four Wheel Drive Hardware lists the parts in their catalog as follows:
Axleshaft assembly - Inner and outer axles, and ujoints preassembled. I think this is the way to go since a ujoint failure usually will mangle the yokes on the axles.
Drivers side - $119.95
Pass. side - $129.95
If you opt to go the easier trail fix which doesn't require you to remove the 36mm axle nut you'll need 2 new hubs which run $129.95 each. This way you remove the entire assembly with just 3 bolts that are 1/2" 12 point socket. This is what I carry. I haven't needed them yet...knock on wood.

Roger,
I friend of mine has been running a Lockright in the D44 front of his CJ-7
for about 4 years and not had a problem with the Lockright . (broke a few
axle/u-joints its tough to tell which goes first sometimes)
The Lockright it actually behaves very similar to my Detroit. He has run
most of the tough rails in Az, Utah and a few in Colorado with no problems.
If you already got an open carrier I would got for it.
BTW Lockrights and AMC Model 20 don't fare well at all my friend blew up
two before going to a Dana axle and a Detroit.
Good Luck

I swapped in a narrow track SJ axle into my YJ, and didn't need to shorten
anything. The axle *almost* bolted right in. Width is within an inch or so of a
YJ. When I first did the swap, I was SUA. I'm now SOA, and no major problems. I
do plan on using flat top knuckles to get my drag link and tie rod over the
springs. For brakes, I swapped in a master cylindar off of some ford car, but I
cann't remember the application for the life of me. If you are interested, let
me know and I'll dig up the app. Check out this link:

Hi Jon.
For your d/s, you want 1310 joints. Parts numbers will vary, but if you tell the parts guy 1310's, he should know. There are 3 options here w/ 1310's...with a zerk in the cross member....with a grease needle fitting in the bearing cap....or non-grease joints.
Personally, I run the zerk ones at the pinion, and the bearing cap ones in the CV's
As to your D30 front axle...on a 98TJ, you'll need 297x joints. I carry spare axle joints, but also carry assembled axles...which makes a trail repair a bit easier. I read Scotts note about having them assembled w/ a bearing hub. This is a good idea if you don't have an impact gun. The 36mm nut is really on there. If you have an impact gun (I use a 12v Harbor Freight Special) just he inner and outers assembled will do. FWIW, I carry a spare bearing hub too, but they're a little pricey.
Happy Trails....
Doug

Hi James;

I think rockcrawler.com has a write up on it (I'm sure there are
others, but I can't remember off hand which sites).

i think you can only get herculiner from Kmart...that is where i got it...it shoudl cost around $100 or less for the gallon can, roller and whatnot...if you read the instructions what you have to do is use some sand paper and rought up the paint and get rid of any rust spots...and then you thoroughly clean everywhere that you are going to apply the herculiner with acetone or xylene (i think that is right) I just picked up a gallon of acetone while i was at kmart. I used the entire gallon to clean the inside of my XJ....and then waited a few hours for it to dry completely and put the herculiner on...really easy...make sure you have plenty of time to let the herculiner dry like 24-48hours i think...and then account for time to put seats and stuff back in....its worth it 1000%

I tried it but it was the no glue type (thick type used for the top of
windshields). It only held up on the rear side windows because they are
stretched so tight. The other windows were a PIA and kept coming loose. I
finally gave up and bought the tinted windows.

Has anyone every applied window tinting to a soft top's plastic
windows. I am sure it can be done, but does it last? What about the
rear window if you roll it up now and then? Is this feasable?
Thanks for your comments..

Subject: [TR] Sycamore Creek - Monday, February 19, 2001
Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Roger,
I friend of mine has been running a Lockright in the D44 front of his CJ-7
for about 4 years and not had a problem with the Lockright .

Doug
