You can do this if you get a switch that is rated for the 40 or so amps,
use 8 or even 6 guage wire and 12 or 10 gauge fusable link wire to prevent
Car-B-Q problems.

Better to get a relay use a smaller switch. When you get into high
currents and low voltages, the wire sizes get big to keep the voltage
drop from getting too big.

Check out "The Lighthouse". It is south of McDowell Rd in the "30
something" Ave area. They have all sorts of auto electrical and lighting
goodies I've needed some weird electrical stuff for the work truck and
they've always had everything I've needed.

The relay that you will need to get will need to be able to remain
energized continuously. The Ford solenoids (starter relays) look like
great at first glance, but they will quickly die if left "on" for long
periods of time.

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Jake lead a trail run Saturday, February 10, 2001 across El Oso Mine

We had a pretty good turn out for the trip. We had 3 TJs, and a Grand Cherokee show up for the run. We took off about 10:30 and headed up to the top of Four Peaks. Continued on and found the trailhead for the mine about 1pm where we came to our first obstacle. Once past that we continued on past El Oso Mine and stopped for lunch. After lunch we got to play in the snow, some spots we had a little over a foot. Thank you Larry and Rich for your guidance on the trail with your GPS. Also thanks to Bryan for blazing through the snow so us stock Jeeps could make it through.

All in all it was a great trip. Not overly challenged, but there were a few spots that were quite challenging.

I had a great time and hope to see everyone out on the trails soon!

Thank You,

My other ( and even more expensive! ) hobby is raising , training and showing German Shepherds. Last wednesday I had to drive down to Casa Grande and repo two of my 13 month old pet puppies from some people that are getting divorced and moving to apartments.....etc, you know the story. Anyway these are beautiful, AKC Champion Sired, black and tan pups ( yes pups, shepherds are'nt adults until they're about two and a half ), one male (neutered), one female (spayed). They have been together since they were babies and so we would like to keep them together if possible but I know that would be a lot for some people ( we have eight, including these kids' brother and sister) so we will split them up if we have to. The boy is going to be huge and is a great big lover, the girl is smaller (as she should be) and is really sweet, both have all shots, AKC papers..etc, of course. If someone out there has a Fenced yard and is ready to make family members of these guys please give me a call, I'll let them go for $200 apiece or $300 to keep them together. They are the perfect age and temperment for obedience, tracking, herding, search and rescue or anything else you have in mind other than being parked in the back yard.
P.S if it helps these guys really do like to ride in a JEEP. ( I don't think its that they actually have anything against a ford or a chevy, etc but my Jeep does smell , read STINK, like them.)

Four Peaks Rd is off of SR 87...north of Ft. McDowell. Class 2 to 2+

It's a nice scenic drive, and you can take it across to the Tonto Basin, and
come back via Apache Trail. El Oso is also off of Four Peaks...along the
ridge.

I'd get that broken bolt fixed soon. It gets ugly when all 3 of them shear off. I've been there, its not fun limping home with all the engine's weight on the manifold which is laying on the fender :(

If your worried about the mounts, replace them with poly mounts. I got my poly mounts from Macromotive for $70. You should'nt have to replace these for a LONG time.

I've been trying to find the elusive 'clunk' that I hear in the front
end when hitting bumps. I've checked the upper/lower control arms,
track bar, tightened some loose swaybar bolts, and just about any
bolt I can see in the front end.. Not much difference..

Then I checked the motor mount on the left side, all bolts seem
tight. I check the right side and notice a loose bolt which actually
turns out to be busted halfway down the shaft. Its one of the three
that bolt to the engine. So now I have only 2 of 3 holding the engine
to the mount.

My question is how can you tell if the big rubber bushing is bad or
worn out? Also, how the heck do you get the remaining part of the
bolt out of the engine so I can replace it?

Is this gonna mean I need to drop the engine and have some shop pull
that bolt out? It sounds expensive..

The work went pretty quickly with the number of people we had helping. Once the work was done we climbed the remaining switchback up to the mine where we stopped to explore the mine. Jeff Meade changed out a rear driveshaft u-joint that had been making noise as a "just in case" precaution. From their, we finished the trail by crawling down the Sluice (not the Luge) and then back down to the cabin.

To all of those that sent me comments and for those that said "let me know
how it turns out cause I am thinking about doing that".....it is done.

It took my friend and I a bit over 5 hours to do the job (not including time
out for lunch, etc.). We took it nice and slow and tried to use every tool
in his toolbox, which included stud pullers, seal pullers, torque wrenches,
3'8" & 1/2" air impact wrenches, and an assortment of sockets, open end
wrenches, hammers, punches, and two big honkin' screwdrivers, (aka, pry
bars).

We kept Murphy at arms length today and he never got into the project,
except for me needing to run to the local Autozone to buy some RTV sealant
(Tera forgot to include the tube they claim is there, per the parts list).
Other than that, it went nicely.

I'll have a detailed write-up with plenty of photos on my web page by the
end of the weekend. In a couple of weeks, the t-case will be going into my
TJ along with a few other parts. (still waiting for the last of them to
show up)

Again, thanks to all that forwarded helpful hints!

Subject: 4 Peaks

The reason you don't hear or see much about 4Peaks here is because most don't think of it as "off road". Here is some info:

You can get to the entrance to 4Peaks Road about 10 miles North of Shea Blvd. off SR 87. It is right hand turn off of 87 and is about 16 miles to the top. The turnoff is well marked as 4Peaks Road. The road is graded dirt for the first half and passable by about any vehicle with some clearance (ie - pickup truck or 'big' sedan. Probably a bad idea to try it in a Honda.) The second half has a couple of spots with small rocks - no challenge to a Jeep or other clearance vehicle but it will stop most passenger cars with smart drivers. The Summit is just under 6000 feet, so is a good place to go in the Summer heat. At the top you can go right to Lone Pine trail head and hike to the real summit (or near to it). There are also some trail heads along the way.

At the top you have several choices. You can return the way you came. Or, you can continue down the other side. The road down is about 9 miles and ends up on SR188 in Punkin Center. If you go left there is a place for a brew and an air hose to fill your tires. Keep going left and SR188 ends at SR87. If you go right, SR188 ends at SR88 at Roosevelt Dam. You can hook up with the Apache Trail which will take you back to Apache Junction and Mesa or continue on to Globe.

Also at the summit, if you head down the other side just before the microwave station you can take a left and there is some decent wheeling back in there. El Oso mine and the Edwards Park run are back there. They are rated a 3-3.5 but are out and back - no exit has been found back there.

One other thing. If you start out at the Coves of Lake Saguaro - Butcher Jones Park - you can take almost any one of those trails known as the Rolls and Coves and eventually meet up with FR13 which will take you to 4 Peaks Road.

It is a nice trip for the scenery along the way, the view and cool temperatures. After you have done it once or twice the trip up gets tedious. It is very washboard but at the same time good enough to make you want to 20-30 mph - also rough enough to shake and rattle you at 20-30 mph.

There is, to the best of my knowledge, only one source. In fact, when I
bought my FSM, the dealer parts counter just gave me a toll free # and told
me to go order it myself (5 star dealership service at its peak). Anyway,
it was right at $100. I asked other TJ owners about that and they commented
that is what they paid. Is this the price you are quoting? (you didn't

My opinion...but not a good idea...esp on a SWB vehicle. You'll be fine
driving this way and will get used to the handling characteristics....But,
in an emergency maneuver (when you least expect it), you and others will
have wished you had it on.
