View Full Version : YJ 4" lift HELP!!!!!!!!
Jamie469

Bought a 4" suspension lift kit for my 94 YJ wrang (Kit includes front and rear leaf springs, transfer case drop kit, front and rear track bar drop brackets, swaybar links, power steering pitman arm, brake line relocation brackets, bumpstops, u-bolts and of course shocks)
Called a local 4 wheel shop and they told me they would charge me almost as much as I paid for the lift, to install it.
Does anyone have the tools/time/ambition to put this in for me? I'll travel, buy the beer, and throw some glorious dollars in your direction if anyone can do it to it for me.

Yup, that seems about right. Problem is it takes time and lots of it so you're paying for that hourly shop rate. It's not hard to do but it would help to have someone there who has done it to point out what you need to do and steer you clear of common problems. I did mine mostly by myself (Rubicon Express 4.5 XD on my 93 YJ).
Do you have an impact and compressor? Not required but it sure helps.
BTW, I think you'll get more offers to help if you phrase it "can anyone stop by and help me put this in? I'm willing to do most/all of the work myself." :D
Also, what part of the valley do you live in?

Thats just the thing.... for the most part I don't know anything about installation, I just moved to arizona and am JUST getting into the 4 wheel stuff so I am pretty much brand new at this. I have no problem getting dirty as long as someone is there to point me in the right direction and make sure I don't screw anything up. I am in Tempe
Ps. I have very little/ to no tools, probably nothing that would help in the installation of a lift kit. Just basic socket/wrench set. What tools would be required for this (bare essentials) I am however, willing to drive pretty much anywhere for help.

You're going to need a decent wrench and socket set for sure. Some locking pliers (vice grips) and needle nose pliers. Work clothes and gloves/hand cleaner will be needed too. Oh, a hammer...especially a big heavy hammer would be helpful. Breaker bar too. This is a weekend thing too. Do you have alternate transportation?

I would offer to do it, but I am booked untill Nov 23rd..... Give Simon or Cole a call at 4 wheelers, they should be able to hook you up with an install. Or you could PM them.... DsrtJeeper or Triple-XJ are both nice guys who have also done some great work helping other members install their kits. Maybe one of them will offer up the help.......... Welcome to the world of Jeepin!!!! You will love it!!!!

First off welcome to the group. With that done:) Where is the YJ from? This is asked because an east coast Jeep adds a lot of hours to the install as rust has set in and every bolt will be a battle. I and everyone else would need to know this to prepare.
Is this your daily driver?
With a 4" lift even with a transfer case drop you could have drive line issues you need to do a SYE and get rid of the drop.
I am not at this point offering to help but trying to point out questions that you need to think about and answer.
Show up at the Jeep 101 class tomorrow you may find some help at the class.

By the way, as long as we're at it, what are the requirements of a SYE, I know a 4" lift would be pushing it, but as long as I'm not going super crazy rock-climbing, would it matter, or is that not even the point?
My jeep was bought right here in the phoenix area, although the clock on the radio is 2 hours fast (central time) so I'm not sure if the old people who owned this before me just moved out here, or if they're just bad with these new fangled electronics. Looking around on the bottom it doesn't have much rust, so my guess is that it hasn't been in much of a rainy/snowy climate (so far)
This is my daily driver yes, as far as ride quality, I don't care about stiff shocks/suspension, my commute is 2 miles each way.

I'd love to help, but my garage is turning into a Jeep dealership! :D I have two project vehicles in dire need of work and the ocassional friend stopping over for assistance. I do have a friend who may be able to help you for a very reasonable fee. His name is Grady and can be reached at:

You will have some driveline vibs without a SYE, how long the bearings will last in the T-case is a crap shoot. The less miles, the longer it will last.
If your interested in a low priced SYE, look into the RE Hack-n-Tap with the RE driveline. I have them on my XJ and I have yet to have ANY problems. Its been a few years now and I'm on 35" tires locked and have broke 5 D-30 shafts  , (Knock on Wood) I have not had an issue with the Hack-n-Tap.
Also, go to Checker Auto and pick up a can of PB Blaster, spray it on ALL the bolts you need to remove for a few days before. Trust me, IT HELPS. :)

78000 miles right now, and I bought her off some decently old people who probably didn't drive it too hard, so hopefully I'll be alright without the SYE for now (only due to money constraints) What should/will a SYE cost me? Install difficulty/cost? As far as the lift install help, I've gotten a pretty good selection, and I think I've got someone lined up on a helper, so thanks much to all those who offered a helping hand and for letting me know which way was up. What else do I need besides a SYE? What about shocks? Who can tell me what I'm lookin for there?

Do your research FIRST, I have a Hack-n-Tap on my XJ but my XJ also uses a longer driveline. The trick I see with the YJ in you want a LONGER driveline.
Google RE Hack-n-Tap or Hack and Tap, see what info you could find.

Sounds like you have it all set up but trust everyone that suggested PB Blaster! I would also add in about $5.00 in quarters at the local spray and wash as you do not need mud and dirt falling in your face while working. I would also start the PB about a week before the install.

I guess experience shows. Everytime I wrench under my TJ mud falls down, I turn my head, then the chunks of mud end up going down my ear canal. Never thought about pressure washing the bottom. :o

Alright, finally got all of my parts in from mail order, and after a few months struggle with UPS losing some parts here and there. Now I need some help putting this in, Is there anyone out there looking to help me some weekend in the near future? As the original thread said, I'll throw a couple bucks your way, and buy the pizza and beer.
I have limited tools and space (virtually none on either), so someone with a garage or shop would be best .
PS> I'll do all the work, the only thing I need is someone there to help and make sure I don't do anything stupid.

I know but I promised Jamie way back in December that I would help him, and I'd like see him out on the trails with us. Besides it's too freakin cold up there right now for this ole flatlander! :D Hopefully I'll make the spring run. I'll probably be wishing that I had gone when every muscle and bone in my body is aching after wrestling with Jamie's YJ. :)

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the slip yoke shaft thingy from Gloeco!! It is junk, doesn't work, and will bend your rear output shaft on your transfercase! Ask me how I know?
I don't know the website offhand, but if you do a google search for PORC (Performance Off Road) you can get a pretty good deal on a SYE/CV Shaft setup. Do yourself a favor and do it right the first time. I would personally hold off on the lift until I could get a SYE setup. I did the tcase drop with my lift and had all sorts of shifting issues which I tried to fix with the gloeco thingy which ultimatey ended up with me purchasing the SYE setup anyway.
Cheers,

If you need any extra help with the install, let me know. I cant bring my service truck with all the goodies. Or bring the Jeep to my shop. We can knock it out on a Saturday.

We got it taken care of last weekend. I'm still sore from wrestling with that YJ!:D
Jamie came over to my house friday night and we got a head start on the front end. We finished it up by around 3 PM Saturday and put my old 33" BFG MT's on it. What a big difference!
Jamie was missing the bolts for the T-case drop kit so we didn't get around to that, plus he still needs to swap out the pitman arm. I didn't have a socket big enough for it.
Hey Jamie, your old springs and the spare tire are still in my backyard. When are ya gonna get them bud! :)

Yes, a HUGE thanks to Mike on helping me with this project. We spent quite a few hours on this and he gave up a perfectly good friday night to help a fellow jeeper.
I was kinda hoping to get that drop kit by this weekend, but Rough Country is pretty slow at calling me back these days. =) I'll probably pick everything up on my way back through Mesa on saturday if that would be alright???
Will you be around this weekend at all? I was thinkin of taking a trip through box canyon and was gonna see if you wanted to run through there with us.
Still no interest on my tires I listed, I think I'll probably need to take some better pictures of them now that they're off. Can't really see much with the pictures I included on the listing.
As far as the pitman arm, my steering seems to be fine, like I said before, unless I get a wild idea or anything, I'm not in any real hurry to do that. The vibes I have are still very minor, only seems to happen between 25-35mph.
Only thing I've noticed is that when I'm slowing down every revolution of my back right wheel something clicks (sounds like someone glued a quarter to the tread) and it just makes a dull click (only below 20 mph) It does it in neutral as well, but when I put on my brakes the sound goes away.
What could this be? (disclaimer: Nobody glued a quarter to my tread....I've checked......... so its definately not anything in/on the tread)

Jamie,
I'm going to the land use meeting Saturday and have plans for Sunday. We will definitely have to get together and make a run somewhere. I'm off on Monday so if your off that day maybe we could hit a trail then.
Give me a call when your in Mesa this weekend to see if I'm home or not for those springs and the tire.
That noise could be the plastic center hub cap not seated in the wheel. Take it out and see if the noise stops.
