I also removed my stabilizer when I reinforced the tie rod and have not
experienced any ill effects. This may not hold true with stock tires,
but I am running 35" swampers. The rotational mass of the tire could
help keep the steering stable. Just a theory.

Congrats on your "smart" decision. Your decision to buy is gonna be
made on your cost to "work that needs to be done" ratio. You can buy
a good used TJ with a low miles for a bit less than showroom,
depending on whether you want to buy it with lift, tires, etc or do
it yourself. If you buy a TJ with a lift, make sure it's at least a
good company's lift, and not just springs and shocks to make it
look "awesome" on the street if you really want to do some good
wheeling with it.

If you get a CJ or YJ, you'll pay obviously less, but may or may not
have to put a lot of out of pocket cash in to fixing/upgrading,
especially if it's been used. That's my assumption, as I have never
purchased or owned a YJ or CJ.

Every jeep has (from an
engineering/marketing/driving/wheeling/quality/cost standpoint) it's
pros and cons. You just have to figure out what's best for you.

Second, do not for any reason whatsoever even consider purchasing
from Topless 4x4 in Scottsdale. They have no idea what it takes to
build a jeep, yet try to sell you one that is "off-road worthy" my
girlfriend (and my tools) are intimately familiar with the "used"
jeeps they sell, and I have also heard numerous horror stories from
them. In our case Tara was sold a 98TJ with 30K miles with: cracked
exhaust manifold, worn springs, shocks that couldn't support their on
weight and lord knows what else I didn't find before we got rid of
it. She paid as much for it as buying a brand new TJ and putting a
quality Teraflex lift on it. In other words, she was ripped off.

Other people on this list may have different stories/opinions, but
that is mine.

Third, everyone has their opinion on what works and what doesn't.
You can't get around that. However, if you know much about wheeling,
especially in AZ where rocks are the norm....you need lots of flex.
I hear people all the time saying how TJ's can't flex well, yet I own
a TJ with a Teraflex lift (and many other people do to) and beg to
differ. They may be a bit softer than a YJ or CJ, but I guarantee
the flex is as good if not better (some YJ/CJ owners will agree and
some won't). I'm sure this will start an "argument" but isn't
discussion the point of posting on a "discussion" board? (Ok so that
was my way of saying "go with a TJ!" =)

Finally, if you do buy used, take someone who is very familiar with
the model you are purchasing to help check it out, could pay off in
the long run.

My 2 1/2 cents...

Subject: Re: Shackle reversal discussion. Opinions wanted.

Back in my YJ days I had a shackle reversal. My experiences with it is the same as Daver's. To do it again I would not have done the shackle reversal. The biggest reason is the lost traction when trying to climb the front tire up an obstacle. With the shackle up front the tire is forced into the obstacle (rather than back) resulting in better traction.

my own Jeeps (I owned a 1956 CJ6 that was stock shackle reversal, 55-56
CJ5 & 6 had this). Shackle reversal on paper looks great as it should
help the "ride" without affecting handling (negatively) and not hurt
offroad capabilities. Well in the real world it does 2 things that are
positive 1. The ride is slightly better 2. The approach angle is the
greatest positive attribute as you can mount the leading eye of the
spring against the frame. On the negative side, nosedive when stopping,
the front axle must be moved forward, therefore you will have to move
the steering box as the draglink and tierod cross, on steep downgrades
the frontend will "dig in" as the shackle moves rearward, when trying to
get over objects the reverse shackle "gives" therefore reducing the
ability of the tire to have maximum pressure on the object you are
trying to get over, with a SOA the twisting motion of the axle will
cause the shackle to move forward and bend the spring from the center of
the axle to the shackle, this is really reduces spring life and causes
the Jeep to "hop" which means you are not getting anywhere and will
probably break something. These are my opinions based on actual
happenings. Mike"

Having said that, I have seen a lot of shackle reversals work very well,
even on SOA vehicles. Just some info for you.

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Randy Siade is leading a Bumble Bee Creek trail run on Saturday, February 24, 2001.

When: Feb. 24 at 9:30am
Where: Meet at Table Mesa Road
Rating: 4.5
Length: Depends on number of vehicles
CB Channel: 7

The trail starts just south of Bumble Bee (FR684), and follows a class 2 trail for a ways, until you get down into the bottom of a canyon. You'll know it when you get there, by the large cottonwoods in it. Turn right up the canyon and keep an eye out for a wash on the right...this will take you to Bumble Bee Creek trail. The sandy wash turns into a narrow slot w/ a decent sized waterfall that you need to scramble up. If there's water in the creek, things will get slick. From there you just have to pick your way through the obstacles. The trail will eventually exit to the right and will take to back to the main trail.

Bumble Bee Creek is a relatively short but very challenging trail. Lockers (front and rear) and at least 33's are highly recommended.

I going to suggest that the Chevy improving bumpsteer, etc by having a stabilizer is
true. The steering geometry is TOTALLY different than a CJ/YJ/etc in how the "drag
link" on the Chevy is really short and is very different. Chevy's (straight axled
versions) are notorious for bump steer with lifts and needing the stabilizer to
help. I think this is why it is needed.

Subject: Jeep Dana20 with Bronco Dana20 gears?

Hey all--

Anyone here done the tcase gear swap from a Bronco Dana20 to a Jeep
Dana20? I've got a 2.05:1 low range D20 from a 77 CJ7 that I would
like to do a lower-range conversion on. What exact parts do I need?
I can't justify spending the ludicrous $$ for the TeraLow conversion
to only give my tcase a 3.15:1 reduction. Besides, I don't need gold-
plated gears :)

I replaced my D18 with a D20 tcase so I've got all of my 18's gears,
but when I tried to swap them in, the gears wouldn't mesh properly,
so I figured I'd wait and do it some other time.

Also, what low range gear ratio does the bronco swap give? I
remember something like 3.15:1 or 3.65:1 but I can't remember. Any
help here would be great.

Subject: RE: New poll for az_vjc

I suppose it is possible for some TJ owners to run without trac bars, (I do
not know any) but doing so would seriously risk damage to the control arms
since all lateral stress would be put on them, a task for which they are not
designed. (Unless I don't fully understand that part of the TJ's suspension
system.)

In my opinion, gathering this data without qualifying what Jeep it is
associated with would render data that means nothing (or at least it would
mean nothing to me). Maybe I am missing something here?

Subject: Re: Jeep Dana20 with Bronco Dana20 gears?

Jeff,
the Bronco Dana20 low range is only 2.46:1. from what i hear the swap isnt a completely cheap one. id guess at around $400 in aquiring the parts unless you already have a Bronco Dana20. the Teralow gears will give you very close to the same reduction as their 4:1 gears for a Dana300 or the NP231. this is probably the way i will eventually go someday when i win the lotto. another option you have is to look for a Dana300 from a 1980 scout. this case has a 2.62:1 low range and will accept 4:1 gears. it also has the same bolt pattern as the Dana20 so it would be a bolt in swap. the downside is they only made these for one year, 1980, so if you find one you will probably have to pay about $500 to get it.

by the way, your Dana18 gears are most likely 2.46:1 just like the Bronco Dana20.

hope this helps
Joey

I have a D20 with those gears, need EB D20 gears, D18 or T18 not sure output
parts, I paid $600 for labor and parts.

Its nice with a 2.47:1 or 2.46:1

EB D20 Is not cheap, $200 and up, D18 is rare. I have one ;)

I have a SOA YJ with no track bars and no steering stabilizer. Removing the
track bars was the first thing that I did when I got my Jeep. I my opinion a
leaf sprung Jeep does not need a track bar, never felt any diffrence. I
don't think that removing the track bar could make rolling any easier.

About 3 mounths ago I bent my stabilizer and took it off, I can not feel any
diffreance at all. I have even driven up to 65 mph on a dirt road with the
sway bar disconnected and the 33's down to 10 psi and no diffreance. Just my
observations.

Subject: [TR] El Oso Mine - Saturday, February 10, 2001

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Jake is leading an El Oso Mine trail run on Saturday, February 10, 2001.

When: Sat 2/10
Where: El Oso Mine/4 Peaks Area
Rating: 3.0
Length: 3-5 hrs
CB Channel: 4

Meet at the Restroom area on the 4 Peaks Road (About a mile off the Beeline) at 10am. Never been to the Mine so if anyone has, please let me know!

El Oso trail is the old ridge trail that runs north along the ridge line from Four Peaks. It goes to the El Oso mine and another mine. It's been replaced by a main trail that runs to the west of El Oso. The E.O. trail parallels this newer (easier) trail along the eastern slope of the ridge line, and rejoins this trail...which will take you to Edwards Park (nice Camp area). Generally a class 3 trail that doesn't get used all that much any more....but it's a great trail to do. You'll be treated to beautiful views set in mixed pines and oak forests.

Subject: FS: mtn bike rack for 2" hitch

About a month ago, I responded to a member's post. He indicated he wanted
my Hollywood 2" receiver rack. Another member also expressed an interest.
The first gent did not come through so it is once again up for grabs, and I
don't have the e-mail from the 2nd person. It is able to clear a rear
mounted spare, such as on a TJ's rear tire carrier or the factory carrier on
my XJ. Pivots down to clear the lift gate on my XJ.

Virtually brand new. Easily holds 3 bikes (designed for 4 if you can make
them fit).

Check the "trips" section on the website, there is a Turkey Creek run
planned for Sunday.
