Kevin,
Congratulations on your new Jeep. The 72,73 and 74 CJ5's are some of the best
ever built. They came with a 30 spline Dana 44 rear end with 1pc axle shafts,
very strong. The front Dana 30 can easily be converted to disk brakes by
using 1978 to 1986 parts. What engine came with it, the 304 V8 or 258 strait
6? The sputtering after its shut off could be a couple of things. Could be
the timing is not set properly or the throttle plate shaft in the carb is
worn and allowing air to sneak by. If its the carb it should be obvious by
leaks around the shafts. I would suggest doing a good tune up even if you
think everything is OK. Make sure the plug wires are in good shape and the
dwell is set correctly. It seems like the art of setting the points in a
pre-electronic ignition vehicle is becoming a lost art. Where are you
located? If you get the parts I'll help.

Pete,

Chris Krieg just purchased the kit and he hasn't installed it yet so I'm
sure you could get the instructions from him.
I have also installed the kit, so if you have specific questions, ask away!

One VERY important thing not mentioned in the instructions:

Coat EVERY small o-ring you install with a liberal coating of silicone
grease before you install them. If you do, they won't dry out and don't
leak. My system will stay charged for a month and drop only about .5 of a
setting in that time.

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Ray B. lead a trail run Sunday, February 4, 2001 across Box Canyon

Well...this one was a bit of a surprise...3 signed up and
10 attended!! What a GREAT turnout. We had CJs, TJs, ZJs
(one was stock!) an explorer(?) and a toyota p/u! We ran
box-canyon with-out a hitch...10 vehicles took a while tho,
then on to the Coke-ovens run. We didn't really have any
problems on the trail...just enjoyed the 80 degree weather
and the greenery from all of the recent rains. Ran into
(Not literally) a Suburban that was blocking our way due
to 2 (yep TWO) broken driveshafts! Once he was outta the
way we got rolling again. On to the coke-ovens with no
other problems. After about 30min at the ovens (with an-
other group of jeepers...around 10) we headed for the river.
We were met by yet another jeeper who informed us that the
way was blocked due to several vehicles stuck in the mud.
We went to look and decided it would be better to try the
other way out. The stuck vehicles had lots of help (and
beer) and seemed to be making some sort of progress, so we
left them to their own devices and headed for the alternate
exit. Crossed the river (looked worse than it was) and then
hit the dirt roads for home. One of the CJs experienced a
minor mechanical difficulty (2 AWOL lug studs) on the
road out, but after a bit of tightening he to was on his
way.

I would like to thank everyone who joined us today. It was
a lot of fun, and I look forward to our next opportunity.
As I was in a hurry this am, I didn't bring paper or pen
to jot down names and jeeps, so forgive me if I don't list
them.

To all who attended...PLEASE send me a quick e-mail with
comments about the run. I'm kinda keeping track!!

Kevin,

I don't recall a metallic paint either but I do remember a lime green color
used on that era CJ's. I think it came with the Renegade package, remember
the hood graphic's. They were a first, for any vehicle back then. one of my
brothers had a 74 Renegade that was a butterscotch color, very 70"s. But it
was the first jeep that I ever rode in, I knew back then even at 10 years old
I would never be without a Jeep. I cant wait to see yours on the trail.

How fast can you afford to go? The old question I would make sure what ever storage system the camera uses can be downloaded fast and can hold a lot of pics. I use flash memory it hooks up to a usb port and is read on the computer just like a removable hard drive. My camera in the normal mode is 800x600 on fine it will go to 1600x1200. I use normal most times. I have two disks a 16 meg and an 8meg that gets me about 260 pictures in normal mode. Hope this helps.

I've had a Warn HS9500i for about 6 weeks. In that time I've used it a dozen times to help other offroaders. Its a great winch and when your respooling the line you'll really appreciate the higher noload line speed. I highly recommend it. IMO an 8000 winch is a little on the light side. Yes it'll pull a Jeep, but usually you also need to overcome something its hung up on, and why does it ALWAYS seem as if your pulling uphill? Anyway, save your money and get the 9500. You won't be saying "Gee, I wish I had bought the 9500." sometime down the road when your trying to help pull fullsize Dodge Ram who's rear wheels are hanging off a cliff :) And you really need to spend the extra $150 to get the Warn accessories kit with the snatch block, chain, treesaver, d-ring, and gloves. About 50% of the pulls I've done so far have utilized the snatch block.

Didn't get too lost. The river wasn't to deep, and we ended
up helping some poor soul accross... His unlifted, running
board clad broncoII wouldn't have made it out the way we
came in. Got home before dark, as planned. Things were going
a bit slow, and a cold drive home wasn't in the cards for me
or my passegers. Sad to hear the trail is mellowed out,
Maybe the monsoons will change things for the better. MIKE

A good quality 640x480 is fine if your only goal is to take pictures and post them on the web, IMO.

If you are looking for a camera that would yield a picture good enough to print on photo paper, you will need higher resolution for sure.

Hey Blair, this is Dan, you came over the other day to look at tires.
When I bought my jeep brand new, it was setup bone stock, 100%
identical to yours. The coves is where I went before I even knew
anything about discos, lifts, tires, etc. It was a bit difficult,
partly because the jeep was so stock, but mostly because I had no
experience. However, it was probably the most fun I ever had out
there, cause it was actually challanging. Now, with my jeep, it's not
even any fun. There's bypasses for some stuff, but in general your
jeep will be fine, may spin a few tires here and there, but with those
30s (or 31s I forget) that you just bought, you will be just fine.
I've seen people with stock, 2wd trucks with IFS and street tires out
there, so anything's possible.
